Choosing the right OTAs and minimising commissions

As a camp or glamp site owner, you want to get more direct bookings and minimise the commission given to OTAs (AirBnB, Pitchup, Expedia and Booking.com etc). Here’s a breakdown of some popular OTAs in the UK and their commission structures:

  • Commission rates range from 15% to 20%, with higher rates for smaller camp or glamp sites.
  • Offers a wide reach and strong brand recognition.
  • Strategically use Booking.com during off-peak seasons or to target specific demographics
  • Commission is a flat 12.5%+VAT (15%).
  • The dominant OTA for UK camping trips so a good option if bookings are the main motivator.
  • Utilise Pitchup during shoulder seasons to save peak season for commission free direct bookings via Outdore.
  • Commission is a competitive 10% + VAT.
  • Campsites.co.uk is one of the UK’s longest-established and most popular camping websites.
  • Seriously consider listing with Campsites.co.uk if already using Pitchup.
  • Commission rates are variable, but tend to be 3% for the ‘Host’ and 7% for the guest.
  • Suited for glamping or unique accommodations.
  • Consider Airbnb for attracting international travellers seeking unique camping experiences.

Any channels to avoid?

We can’t recommend Glampsites.co.uk as they only support iCal export, so you’d need to key any bookings made elsewhere manually into your Glampsites calendar, defeating the automated multi-channel distribution strategy.

At first glance, Holiday Fox’s 5% commission looks attractive, however they insist you add their booking widget to your website, so you end up paying 5% on all direct bookings too, wreaking plans to grow commission free direct bookings!

Canopy & Stars charge 20% commission, and insist on sole agency, so we don’t recomend them unless it’s your first year and you particularly want a site visit/personalised glampsite consultancy.

Summary

Remember, the key to maximising direct bookings and minimising OTA reliance is to strike a balance between using OTAs strategically and investing in your own direct booking channels. By implementing the strategies mentioned above, you can effectively grow your direct booking business and achieve sustainable profitability for your camping or glamping business.
